The Main Differences Between Electric and Petrol Cars

When deciding on what car to get in today’s modern society, one needs to establish what their priorities are, and what benefits and drawbacks each type of vehicle has.

The blanket term for “electric” cars can mean many things because there are a few eco-friendly options when deciding to switch from a traditional ICE (internal-combustion engine) vehicle. With cars ranging from mild hybrids, full hybrids, plug-in electrics, and more, there’s a lot to choose from, each with their own advantages and disadvantages.

The Differences Between the Two

It’s easy to take a look on paper and to see that an electric car is better for the environment because you’re outputting far lower CO2 emissions, and not contributing to the use of fuel like petrol or diesel. There are certain drawbacks at times, especially depending on where you live, as well as your wallet size that may influence your decisions too.

Hybrids

The hybrid cars that run a mixture of fuel and battery are some of the most popular choices at this time. This is due to their lower emissions overall, and improved economy over regular cars. For the most part, the wheels, and the engines work in conjunction by charging the battery using regenerative braking, giving them their own charge. There are also plug-in hybrids that charge using a charging point. The downside to these cars is that they cost a little more, there’s not really a lot to gain in terms of raw power, and the emissions are still not low enough because you’re still using fuel.

Electric Vehicles

With electric cars, you’re making the best environmentally friendly choice. They don’t need any fuel whatsoever. The on-board battery will need to be charged and mileage will depend on how you use the vehicle and what type of charging it does. It can charge with a rapid charger giving up almost a full battery in 45 minutes, or over trickle charge, taking a few hours. The downside to this is the range on the vehicle, as you’ll not be able to travel as far on electric as you would with a full fuel tank. These vehicles are also far more expensive and in some, less developed areas, the charging network will not be fully developed.

For Penrith Engines, there’s no car that we can’t service, and you may find it interesting to note that electric car maintenance isn’t quite as complicated as some people think. Electric cars have fewer moving parts so there’s less to worry about.
